Partisanship Accusation Expanded in Alabama
by Phillip Shenon of NYT

The son of Alabama’s current Republican governor boasted that a
Republican judge would “hang Don Siegelman,” a former Democratic
governor of Alabama, for partisan reasons, according to a deposition
by a Republican lawyer from Alabama.

The governor’s son, Rob Riley Jr., denied Ms. Simpson’s accusation.
In a telephone interview, Mr. Riley said that she “has more outlandish
accusations” and that “none of them are true.”

Governor's son says he'll refute lawyer's
testimony
by Dana Beyerle of Times Daily

....In her Sept. 14 testimony that was released Wednesday along with
Judiciary Committee majority membership talking points, Rob Riley
said Simpson did not tell the truth.

"I'm working right now on an affidavit I plan to file with the committee
addressing the untruthfulness of Ms. Simpson's testimony," said Rob
Riley, a Birmingham lawyer.

When asked if he is willing to testify under oath before the committee,
he said, "Absolutely." He said he has not been called to testify.

Karl Rove Linked to Siegelman Prosecution
by Scott Horton of Harper's

Significant new information is appearing on the Siegelman case, in
the form of the 143-page deposition of Jill Simpson, a Republican
lawyer who previously issued an affidavit that described a telephone
conversation in which Alabama’s leading G.O.P. strategist described
Rove intervening with the Justice Department to get the Siegelman
case going. The deposition is backed by a mountain of documents
that corroborate Simpson’s statements on most critical points. The
transcript was leaked by Republican Judiciary Committee staffers
earlier in the week to the vest-pocket publication of the Alabama G.O.
P., the Birmingham News, as I noted yesterday. Today, however,
Time magazine weighs in with an accurate account of the transcript,
which I am still reviewing.

Congressional Hearing - Canceled

The congressional hearing into whether the U.S. Justice Department
selectively prosecuted Democrats, including former Gov. Don
Siegelman, has been postponed, according to a committee
spokeswoman.

A new date has not been announced.

The U.S. House canceled votes for Thursday because of the funeral
of Rep. Jo Ann Davis, R-Va.
