Chicago Court Orders Discovery of DOJ
Political Prosecutions
Scott Horton of Harper's

....Improper White House manipulation of criminal justice machinery
took a consistent form: political appointees, acting on White House
instructions, would “allocate resources” and “deny resources.” When
Rove wanted people “taken out,” copious resources—FBI
investigators and prosecutors—would be allocated to concocting a
case. When Rove wanted to shield Republican operatives who came
under suspicion, federal prosecutors would be fired, transferred,
retired or reassigned with regularity. The so-called U.S. Attorneys
scandal is one manifestation of this process, but in fact it is reflected
in a consistent pattern of dealings that stretch back to the beginning
of the Bush Administration.

Attacking Jill Simpson Again
Legal Schnauzer

Yesterday, [Birmingham News] reporters Mary Orndorff and Brett
Blackledge took a crack at it. Today, it's Kim Chandler's turn.

Chandler quotes three lawyers close to Siegelman--Joe Espy, Bobby
Segall, and Walter Braswell--as saying they were not aware of any
deal to call off Siegelman's 2002 election challenge in exchange for
an end to the federal investigation of Siegelman. Hey Kim, I hear
Siegelman didn't tell his barber; might want to check that out.

Siegelman attorneys unaware of any deal
by Kim Chandler of Birmingham News

Say he never mentioned offer to end inquiry

If Alabama Republicans offered Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman a
deal - concede the election and a federal investigation will end - he
never told several lawyers representing him.

Jill Simpson of Rainsville testified last month that she was told the
deal was being taken to Siegelman during his challenge of
Republican Bob Riley's 2002 election win. Simpson told House
Judiciary Committee investigators she didn't witness any
conversation with Siegelman, but she said Riley's son, Rob Riley, told
her about events.

Siegelman did call off his election challenge. But if he was offered
such a deal, he chose not to tell his attorneys about it, according to
three lawyers who represented him in the recount battle or in his later
criminal case.
