Franklin to Butts: “You’re Sleaze.”

While the transcript of the Siegelman trial is still not finished, and its
absence is holding up Siegelman’s appeal, bits and scraps of it have
come out and much of it makes for very interesting reading. One
thing that stands out is that Judge Fuller allowed Prosecutor Franklin
to get away with conduct that other judges would not have
sanctioned. In one passage, Franklin calls defense counsel Terry
Butts “a sleaze.” Fuller refuses to chastise or rebuke him in any way.

The permanent Republican majority:
Daughter of jailed governor sees White
House hand in her father's fall
by Larisa Alexandrovna of Raw Story

....Dana Siegelman:Dad had won....My dad was already onstage
saying his thank-yous, when we came up to join him. It was a very
special moment for the Siegelman family. We were just so happy for
him.

Raw Story: But something changed overnight, is that correct?

DS: Well, the next morning, November 6th, my dad's opponent, Bob
Riley, came on Alabama statewide television announcing that he had
won, and that there had been an error with the ballots in Baldwin
County. How he had news of this and my dad, the governor, did not,
is beyond me.

GOP Comeback Climb Is Increasingly Steep
Vacancies Appear in Competitive Areas
by Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post

Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott's resignation announcement on
Monday was the latest in a wave of retirements to hit congressional
Republicans, making an already difficult 2008 electoral landscape
even more complicated for the minority party.

Party officials insist that the retirements -- 17 members of the House
and six senators -- are simply the result of individual decisions and
not indicative of a broader negative sentiment within the party.

Siegelman: the Victim of Break-Ins
Legal Schnauzer

* [Dana Siegelman] On the importance of [her father's] story:

"This isn't just a sad story or a bump in the road for politics. This is
the corruption of the United States Justice Department. This is a
criminal conspiracy for political reasons at best . . . I hate to use this
as an example because it upsets me, but truth be told, this is cancer,
not a cold."

Trent Lott’s Resignation
by Scott Horton of Harper's

.... But Washingtonians know that whenever a politician leaves to
“spend more time with his family,” there are likely to be other
reasons. Sources in Mississippi law enforcement inform No Comment
that FBI agents are now raiding the law office of Richard “Dickie”
Scruggs in Oxford. Scruggs is the brother-in-law of Trent Lott, and,
as we reported earlier, several Mississippi newspapers openly
questioned whether Lott had intervened to protect Scruggs in a
recent criminal probe that produced the prosecution of a number of
other Mississippi lawyers and judges with whom he was closely
connected. Could there be a connection between the FBI raid and
the Lott resignation? Just asking.
