Mukasey says he hasn't pursued Siegelman
case
by Mary Orndorff of The Birmingham News

WASHINGTON - U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey said
Thursday that it is inappropriate for politicians to try to influence
criminal prosecutions. But he has not pursued an allegation that such
interference led to former Gov. Don Siegelman's conviction in
Montgomery two years ago.

"I can't conceive of any circumstance in which it would be proper for a
U.S. attorney to respond to any inquiry from any political figure about
the bringing or the withholding of a prosecuting decision," Mukasey
said at a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee.

But when Rep. Artur Davis, D-Birmingham, asked what steps
Mukasey has taken to investigate allegations of just such political
interference in cases from three states, including Alabama, Mukasey
said he hasn't.
