1. House Judiciary chairman Conyers says
Siegelman case e-mails raise questions
by Kim Chandler of  Birmingham News

.....Leura Garrett Canary, the U.S. attorney for the Middle District of
Alabama, has maintained she stepped aside in 2002 after
Siegelman's legal team raised the issue of her husband's ties to
Republican politics. Her husband, Bill Canary, is a political ally of Gov.
Bob Riley, who defeated Siegelman in the 2002 gubernatorial race.

In the fall of 2005, Leura Canary forwarded the prosecutors an e-mail
Siegelman wrote to his supporters. She made a suggestion about the
handling of the case that appeared to be questioning whether there
were grounds for a gag order.

In the e-mail, Canary wrote, "Heaven only knows how I got on this e-
mail list. Ya'll need to read because he refers to a `survey' which
allegedly shows that 67 percent of Alabamians believe the
investigation of him to be politically motivated. (Perhaps grounds not
to let him discuss court activities in the media?)".
