Who knows what else is out there? Who knows how much the judiciary
has been damaged? As long as the president stubbornly clings to the
idea of executive privilege and the truth is not known, many things that
this Justice Department does will be suspect. Successful prosecutions in
the past - yes, the conviction of former Gov. Don Siegelman included -
will be viewed in a different light. Ongoing and future political
investigations also will be suspect.

It's not hard to notice the intensity with which the feds pursued

Putting aside the jury's verdict for a moment, it's not hard to notice the
intensity with which the feds pursued Siegelman, a Democrat who still
had a viable political future until his legal problems landed in federal
courts. Could it be going hard after political rivals is what's expected of
"loyal Bushies"? It's not so easy to dismiss such speculation given recent
revelations. Sadly, confidence in the impartiality of the U.S. Justice
system is but one more casualty of the growing firing scandal.

Department of Injustice By Paul Krugman
The growing scandal over the firing of federal prosecutors immediately
brought to mind the subpoenas that Chris Christie, the former Bush
appointed U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, issued two months before the
2006 election — and the way news of the subpoenas was quickly leaked
to local news media.
But given what we’ve learned about the pressure placed on federal
prosecutors to pursue dubious investigations of Democrats, Mr.
Menendez’s claims of persecution now seem quite plausible.

The Political Profiling of Elected Democratic Officials
By Donald C. Shields and John F. Cragan
Our ongoing study of the Bush Justice Department (to be published in
2009) investigates the implications of the Bush/Ashcroft/Gonzales Justice
Department's blended religious -fundamentalist and neo-conservative
rhetorical vision. The study views the impact of the Justice Department's
vision on the fight against public corruption and reveals the non-
proportionate political profiling of elected Democratic officials.

“U.S. Attorney Leura Canary stepped aside from the investigation of
Gov. Don Siegelman's administration on Thursday, saying she wanted to
avoid any question of impartiality. The move came nearly two months
after Siegelman's attorney complained to the U.S. Justice Department
about Canary's husband, political consultant Bill Canary, having ties to
some of Siegelman's Republican opponents.”
