SCLC Raises Serious Questions about the Siegelman Case - In
the light of the fired U.S. Attorneys, the SCLC expresses concerns
that political profiling is as offensive as racial profiling.

To Senator Leahy
Fax from SCLC 4/30/07
Dear Senator Leahy:
This letter comes to you as the United States House of Representatives
and the United States Senate are investigating the firing of several U.S.
Attorneys and the possible involvement and wrongdoing of the United
States Attorney General Alberto Gonzales in that action. While SCLC is
a nonpartisan organization, and has no connection to either the
Republican or Democratic Party, one of the responsibilities of the
organization is to ensure that our nation’s public policy decisions are
made in the best interest of American citizens and not as political tools.
According to an April 19, 2007 Washington Post article, “ eight U.S.
Attorneys were fired last year in accordance with a plan that originated in
the White House to replace federal prosecutors who were not considered
sufficiently loyal to Bush and his policies. Much of the political furor over
the dismissals has revolved around conflicts between the explanations
offered by Gonzales and information in e-mails released by the Justice
Department. Two U.S. Attorneys also have alleged that they came under
pressure from Republican lawmakers over investigations they were
conducting.”
