Dishonesty and the ExxonMobile Ruling
Legal Schnauzer
... Scarritt notes Alabama's No. 1 position in the country on spending
for judicial races, and he seems to share the concerns of retired U.S.
Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Connor that such heavy
fund-raising gives the impression that justice is for sale.
Scarritt then notes the Alabama Supreme Court's recent decision to
override a $3.6 billion verdict against ExxonMobil and in favor of the
state of Alabama in a case involving natural-gas royalties. He says
that decision adds to the perception that justice is for sale.

A stain on Lady Justice
by Bob Martin of The Montgomery Independent
The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta has again asked the
judge who sentenced former Gov. Don Siegelman for a more detailed
explanation of why he refused to let Siegelman remain free on bond
while the former governor appeals his conviction.
In an apparent rush to throw Siegelman in shackles and denying the
former governor the ability to even say goodbye to his family
following his sentencing, the judge, Mark E. Fuller, a district judge in
the Middle District of Alabama, failed to rule on the motion for
release, gaveling down Siegelman's lawyer when she pressed him for
a ruling.
