Watchdogs, lapdogs and old dogs

....From the front row, Curran objected to Horton's statement that he
and others must have been fed confidential information by the
attorneys prosecuting Siegelman. That might have turned into an
interesting discussion but for the fact that when Curran tried to speak,
he was repeatedly told by audience members to shut up and do other
things. That's the passion I mentioned earlier - passion and rudeness.
At least people cared enough about an issue to show up.
On one point Horton and I agree. Alabama has a history of politically
motivated prosecutions by both parties, and it needs to stop.
So are we watchdogs or lap dogs? Me, I'm just an old dog. But I would
note that I am closely associated with both a watchdog and a lap dog,
and they're one and the same. Her name is Sally. She's a German
shepherd, and I keep her away from political events. No telling what
she might do if things got hot.

....Kilborn has until May 23 to file the appeal of Siegelman's March 28,
2007, conviction. He says if they lose in the 11th Circuit Court of
Appeals in Atlanta, which already ordered Siegelman released
because it found "substantial questions of law of fact" in the case, he
will "definitely" appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
"On appeal, we can bring in some of the issues that weren't allowed in
Judge Fuller's courtroom, but which are in the overall record," he said.
"Selective prosecution, the larger plot to get Don, those sorts of
things - things the jury never heard about but that are in the record
because of our arguments.

....Even more curious is the matter of Young's whereabouts:
Although he was sentenced to two years in prison, Young was
released last December after serving 11 months. "As soon as the
Time magazine story came out, when he was naming names about
Republicans, he was immediately let out of prison and hasn't been
heard from since," Siegelman said. "I don't know that anybody knows
where he is, but I know Time magazine has been looking for him, as
well as some other people. But they can't find him."
