MONTGOMERY – Alabama Democratic Party Executive Director Jim
Spearman today called on U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) to offer
a formal recusal of his activities related to Senate Judiciary
Committee investigations or hearings related to controversies at the
U.S. Department of Justice, and more specifically any future
investigations or hearings related to the matter of former Governor
Don Siegelman.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — A state Democratic Party official has
urged Republican U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama to disqualify
himself from any Senate Judiciary Committee hearings into the
prosecution of former Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman.
A Sessions' aide dismissed the statement from Democratic Party
Executive Director Jim Spearman as "party politics."
Spearman said Sessions should not participate because of
statements the senator made questioning the need for such hearings
and a Time magazine report that a key witness against Siegelman
also told of possibly illegal contributions to a Sessions campaign.

Hearing on Siegelman prosecution postponed

WASHINGTON -- Thursday's congressional hearing into whether the
U.S. Justice Department selectively prosecuted Democrats, including
former Gov. Don Siegelman, has been postponed, according to a
committee spokeswoman.
A new date has not been announced.
The U.S. House canceled votes for Thursday because of the funeral
of Rep. Jo Ann Davis, R-Va.

Lawyer: Siegelman promised prosecution
would end with 2002 election concession

.....A Rainsville lawyer told congressional investigators last month
that former Gov. Don Siegelman conceded his 2002 election after
Alabama Republicans promised to end a federal investigation of his
administration.
The statement adds a significant revelation by Jill Simpson, who
previously said in a sworn statement that Siegelman dropped a
recount in 2002 because a supporter planted an opponent's
campaign signs at a Klan rally. She did not mention claims in that
sworn statement that Alabama Republicans assured him a federal
investigation would cease if he dropped out of the race.
Simpson also told lawyers with the U.S. House Judiciary Committee
that the reason she offered the sworn statement earlier this year was
because she was concerned that Chief U.S. District Court Judge
Mark Fuller of Montgomery had a conflict in Siegelman's case and
should have recused himself.

Simpson Transcript Wednesday

The House Judiciary Committee will apparently release the transcript
of North Alabama lawyer and GOP whistleblower Jill Simpson's
deposition in the investigation of former Alabama Governor Don
Siegelman on Wednesday, sources say.
Copies of the transcript were apparently leaked to some news
organizations by a staff member for one of the minority, Republican
members of the committee, in violation of an agreement with Ms.
Simpson and her attorney, which resulted in a misleading blog post
today on the Newhouse, Advent Communications Website al.com.
