New Grand Jury Looks at 2-Year College System
Doc's Political Parlor
A solid source tells the Parlor that a new federal grand jury
investigation is underway related to the two-year college system. As
a result of the inquiry, the federal government has requested and
obtained records from various locations in the state, including, but
not limited to, Northeast Alabama Community College.
There is also much scuttlebutt on the street that there may be
indictments from a past grand jury that have simply not been
delivered yet.

Could Big News come before November
Elections?
By Roger Schuler of Legal Schnauzer
....What could it all mean? Raju provides perspective:
“I think it could be historic,” said David Iglesias, former U.S.
attorney in New Mexico, who was one of the nine ordered to
resign by the Bush administration. “Arguably it’s the most
significant investigation OPR and OIG have done in a
generation, or maybe ever.”

Reviews are mixed for HBCU director
Thomas
by Bob Lowry & Kenneth Kesner of the Huntsville Times
The Governor's Commission on Historically Black Colleges and
Universities was created to provide extra support for schools that
often struggle to survive.
But Gov. Bob Riley's director of that commission, Malcolm Thomas of
Huntsville, hasn't won resounding endorsements from many of the
officials at Alabama's 15 HBCUs. The commission, made up of the
presidents of the state's HBCUs and headed by a director appointed
by the governor, is charged under the executive order with
"promoting Alabama's HBCUs in seeking to increase opportunities for
HBCUs to participate in and benefit from federal financially-assisted
programs." Officials at several of the HBCUs contacted by The Times
said they haven't had much regular contact with Thomas since he
was appointed by Riley five years ago.
