Siegelman case could turn into another
Capitol clash
In part by Mary Orndorff  - News Washington - for Birmingham News

WASHINGTON - A request for records detailing the Justice
Department process that led to former Gov. Don Siegelman's
prosecution is a small step toward what could become a full-scale
congressional investigation.

Four members of the House Judiciary Committee, including its
chairman, asked for documents related to the case on Tuesday,
saying they want to know who decided and when to prosecute
Siegelman. It draws the Alabama case into a probe of political
influence in the firing of U.S. attorneys that has so far produced
thousands of internal e-mails, dramatic hearings and a constitutional
showdown over White House claims of executive privilege.

RESPONSE TO ERRORS IN
SIEGELMAN/SCRUSHY NATIONAL NEWS
ACCOUNTS

This is to respond to recent articles and editorials published in
various newspapers and other media pertaining to the convictions
and recent sentencings of former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman
and former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy.  These articles and
editorials have called into question the legitimacy of the motivation
for prosecuting these individuals. They contain factual errors and
omissions that portray an inaccurate and misleading version of the
events leading to the convictions.

Each of these accounts ignores and omits numerous significant facts,
including the following:

Rip Andrews Media Release Response to AP's
claim that he "contradicted" Simpson's Affidavit
By Rip Andrews

After AP's Bob Johnson wrote that Rip Andrews contradicted the
Simpson affidavit he wrote...."I happen to believe everything in that
affidavit - every paragraph, every sentence, every word. There is
simply no reason on God's green Earth that a woman in her position
would make up something like that."

Siegelman aides contradict main part of Simpson
affidavit
By Bob Johnson  The Associated Press

...the affidavit, Simpson said she took pictures of the man placing
Riley campaign signs near the site of the planned Klan rally. And she
recounts that attorney Terry Butts planned to use that information to
get Siegelman to drop his challenge [to a recount in the 2002
Alabama Governor's race.]

She said in the affidavit she received a call later that day from Riley's
son and campaign manager, Rob Riley, who told her: "Terry Butts
had talked with Don Siegelman and that Don Siegelman would be
resigning before the ten o'clock news."

Siegelman did resign that evening, but along with his dismissal of her
account, Butts also has denied that Siegelman told him the Riley
signs at the Klan site were any factor in his concession.

Javert’s Wailings
by Scott Horton at Harpers

....Together, these reporters and the prosecutor built a case of
smoke and mirrors, and the reporters then peddled it to the public as
something serious. And this was coupled with oh-so-pious editorials
urging the public to express outrage over this horrible and unfaithful
governor, and embrace all the more readily the wonderful, upright
and moral Republican governor who replaced him. The Republican
governor, that is, who arrived in office on the shoulders of Jack
Abramoff.

The lovefest is returned. The Birmingham News has promptly posted
the entire statement. They even posted all the PDF attachments that
the prosecutor put up. This is what we call “fair” and “balanced”
reporting.
