1.As Horton predicted in Harper's yesterday in "The ‘B’ham News’
Revs Up the Slime Machine", an article appears that targets Davis
through an aide.
2. AJC's Cynthia Tucker sites the Siegelman case as a Democratic
Party "cause celebre".

Political aide's salary paid by 2-year colleges
McKell worked for Siegelman, Artur Davis on
system's dime
Brett J. Blackledge of the Birmingham News
In an interview last week, Davis defended McKell's arrangement to be
paid by two-year colleges to work in his office. He said it was clear to
him that system officials approved the idea, and had approved her
working for Siegelman and for Riley ....
"If it was permissible for a junior college employee to be loaned to the
executive office to work for the governor, again, I'm struggling to see
frankly what question would exist about her being loaned to this
office," Davis said.

Politics tainted Justice Department's investigations
My Opinion by Cynthia Tucker for AJC
....The conviction — Siegelman was sentenced to seven years and
four months in prison — has become a cause celebre among
Democrats. The House Judiciary Committee is scrutinizing it. And
more than 40 former state attorneys general, including a few
Republicans, have urged Congress to look into it.
"The case brought against Governor Siegelman may have had
sufficient irregularities as to call into question the basic fairness that
is the linchpin of our system of justice," their letter said.
Any Democrat now targeted by federal investigators would be foolish
not to claim to be a victim of a partisan crusade. The charge has a
credibility it shouldn't. And wouldn't, if President Bush had resisted
the impulse to treat the Justice Department as just another GOP
trophy room.

Gary Tramontina for The NYT
Democratic Representative Artur Davis is being targeted by the Birmingham News. Davis is among those who have raised questions about the federal government’s motives in prosecuting Don Siegelman, the former governor of the state.
