The Absurdity of Deceit and the Comfort of Truth
By Phil Smith Report from Birmingham
And not to be outdone by the boss, the level of contradiction reached
a new high in published quotes attributed to Louis Franklin. When
asked about the over 500 pages of withheld documents pertaining to
Leura Canary’s recusal, Franklin said: “I don’t know what’s in those
pages.” OK, so Louis Franklin is in the dark and the only person that
knows the contents of that tome is supposedly the Canary’s and the
DOJ keepers who refuse to disclose their contents. But then after
making that statement, he is reported to have said there was nothing
sinister about Canary’s recusal. And there we fall into that frustrating
problem again. If Louis Franklin really doesn’t know what is contained
in all of those documents, how could he possibly know there was
nothing sinister about the recusal?

More from the World of the ‘Bama Press
By Scott Horton Harper's
[Concerning] the very strange tap dance that the Montgomery U.S.
Attorney’s office has made around the question of Leura Canary’s
recusal from oversight of the Siegelman matter. It included
discussions with several Department of Justice sources who all
concurred that nothing about Mrs. William Canary’s “recusal” was
normal, that is, it didn’t stack up with the standard procedures
followed by U.S. Attorneys when they recuse themselves.
In the course of the week .... some more rather odd things happened.
One is that the Department of Justice, which had denied a FOIA
request brought by an Alabaster, Alabama attorney named John
Aaron, decided to turn over a key document to the Mobile Press-
Register. As we have noted before, the Press-Register seems to
have an extraordinarily cozy relationship with the Montgomery U.S.
Attorney’s office.

Contrary to what was written in yesterday’s AP story - Siegelman’s Attorney DID NOT ask for Canary’s recusal in 2002 simply because her husband was a GOP consultant.
Siegelman’s attorney asserted a conflict because the US Attorney’s husband Bill Canary was a paid consultant for Steve Windom, Siegelman’s 02 opponent for Governor and Canary also was a paid consultant for Bill Pryor who was running the Siegelman case for the state in what was a joint state- federal investigation.
Secretary of state records show Bill Canary had been paid 40k by Pryor and 38k by Windom.
