Today, for the first time, Karl Rove is fingered in a plot to take over
the Alabama State house. And what is the meaning of this extreme
prison term sentence for Don Siegelman?

U.S. Attorney's Scandal -Birmingham, Cont'd.
by Scott Horton Harper's 6/01/07
Good buddies Karl Rove and William Canary plotted to take over the
Alabama Statehouse. This long time friend of Karl Rove is the same
William Canary mentioned in the recently surfacing affidavit, married
to the US Attorney in Alabama who began to "investigate" Siegelman
at Rove's bidding. Seems that the New York Times has now secured
the full text of the affidavit which is quoted in the morning edition, and
it’s far more explosive than first indicated. To the point, it fingers the
White House operator who called the shots to line up a prosecution
of Governor Siegelman, and his name is Karl Rove.

Rove Named in Alabama Controversy
by Adam Zagorin/Washington TIME/CNN 6/01/07
Riley campaign staffer, Attorney Dana Jill Simpson, a lifelong
Republican who practices in Alabama, stated in an affidavit she
heard Bill Canary, Governor Riley's campaign advisor, in a
conference call with the White House say that Rove "had spoken with
the Department of Justice" about "pursuing" Siegelman. Simpson
claimed that Canary said "not to worry about Don Siegelman"
because "his girls" would "take care of" the governor. Canary then
clarified that "his girls" were his wife, Leura Canary, the U.S. Attorney
for the Middle District of Alabama, and Alice Martin, the U.S. Attorney
for the Northern District of Alabama. <more at time.com online>

Canary Promised Rob Riley that his "Girls" Would
Take Care of Siegelman.
By Edmund L. Andrews The New York Times 6/01/07
Ms. Simpson said Mr. Bill Canary, advisor to Governor Riley, assured
the Governor Riley's son, Rob Riley, that “his girls would take care
of” Mr. Siegelman before he had a chance to run for the governor’s
seat in 2006 and identified “his girls” as his wife, U.S. Attorney Leura
Canary and Alice Martin, the United States attorney in Birmingham.
Mr. Franklin who led the prosecution, claiming that he was unaware
of the contents of the affidavit, contends that he was responsible for
the prosecution, not Canary. He said "that responsibility for the
indictment should be mine. I made the decision”.

What am I missing?
By Josh Marshal Talking Points Memo 6/01/07
Now, given my focus on public corruption in the last few years, far be
it from me to call for leniency on crooked pols. But this strikes me as
wildly out of line with the sentences I've seen in the last couple years.
For some context, Siegelman was acquitted on 25 counts and
convicted on seven. With those charges Siegelman didn't pocket any
money himself but rather, in the words of the Times, persuaded a
wealthy businessman "to pay $500,000 to retire the debt of a political
group that had campaigned to win voter approval for a state lottery."
Compare this to Duke Cunningham, perhaps the most brazen and
audacious bribetaker in recent decades. Duke to cash payments
from multiple federal contractors in exchange for securing defense
contracts. Duke got eight years and four months in prison. Duke
pleaded out, which probably took some time off his sentence. But
nothing Siegelman was convicted of seems even remotely in Duke's
league and yet they want to give him a sentence almost four times as
long?

“Rob Riley asked about Siegelman being a problem in the future... but he was told by William “Bill” Canary not to worry about Don Siegelman that “his girls would take care of him...” that he had already gotten it worked out with Karl and Karl had spoken with the Department of Justice…”
