Don Siegelman has seen the face of the enemy, and it is deceptively
cherubic. It is the visage of “Bush’s brain,” Republican strategist Karl
Rove.

Was There a Right Wing Conspiracy against
Siegelman?
By William Perkins DothanEagle.com posted 12:05 A.M.
A November 2004 article in the Atlantic Monthly, “Karl Rove in a Corner”
by Joshua Green, reveals some alarming information about Rove’s
political activities in Alabama. Green’s reporting illuminates several
controversial races in Alabama and helps make the pieces of this puzzle
fit together nicely.
Rove and Canary are old pals from Canary’s days at the White House
during the administration of George H.W. Bush. Green reports that in
1994, the BCA brought Rove in to help elect Republican candidates to
the traditionally Democrat-held state Supreme Court.
Remember Harold See’s down-and-dirty judicial campaigns? Those were
Rove’s ideas. “Rove’s reputation for winning is eclipsed only by his
reputation for ruthlessness, and examples abound of his apparent
willingness to cross moral and ethical lines,” Green writes.
So what has this to do with Siegelman?

Where There's Smoke....

The claims of White House involvement in the Siegelman prosecution via
the dark personage of Rove are contained in an affidavit by Rainsville
attorney Dana Jill Simpson.
But there are many unanswered questions about Simpson’s four-page
affidavit, including why it was filed in Georgia and why neither
Siegelman's attorneys nor the feds seemed to have been aware of it
when both the New York Times and Time magazine’s Web site reported
on it a week ago Friday.
Simpson, who told Time that she had been a longtime Republican and
supporter of Riley, said she filed the affidavit after recalling a conference
call that for some reason included Terry Butts, a former Democratic state
appeals court judge and one of several lawyers who would go on the
represent Scrushy last year.
