Siegelman Goes Straight to Jail.
by Kim Chandler and Charles J. Dean Birmingham News 6/29/07

Former Gov. Don Siegelman, once a rising political star were taken
from a Montgomery courtroom late Thursday and put in shackles to
begin lengthy prison terms for their convictions on bribery,
conspiracy and mail fraud.

Civil rights icon the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, attended much of the
sentencing hearing to support Siegelman, called Fuller's sentence
"terribly harsh."

Former Gov. Guy Hunt "stole money, but he never went to jail, .... So
this is just politics," Shuttlesworth said.

Franklin, who was heading the prosecution,  said the verdicts and
sentence sends a message that this was "a righteous prosecution."

"A crime like this deserves imprisonment, a sentence that says you
can't sell your office," Franklin said.

Siegelman taken to Atlanta GA Federal Prison in
Shackles
by Bob Johnson AP 6/29/07

Defending the extreme sentences imparted to Siegelman, Bob
Johnson writes that the stiff sentences and abrupt imprisonment is
part of a pattern, not directed at Siegelman personally. His article
patently ignores the questions of White House directed prosecutions
increasingly coming to light and the possibility of Karl Rove
involvement in the Siegelman case.
