credibility to concerns that the Republicans have politicized federal
investigations. Siegelman proposed sentence is extreme and

U.S. Attorneys Scandal—Birmingham and
Montgomery
by Scott Horton Harper's
In response to a FOIA request for documents focusing on the
interaction of the White House with the Alabama federal prosecutors,
the Department of Justice responded by a blanket refusal. Not a
denial that any documents existed. A refusal to turn them over. There
is a cover-up underway here, and a genuinely detached prosecutor
needs to be appointed to get to the bottom of it. Starting with a
careful examination of the email and other written communications
concerning the matter and interviews of the two U.S. Attorneys
involved, Mr. Canary and Mr. Rove.
Time was when we could trust a federal prosecutor to act with
professional detachment and avoid even the appearance of political
gamesmanship. That time has clearly passed.

Rove to Siegelman Case
by Bob Johnson Associated Press 6/07/07 7:46 p.m. ET
"I believe honestly that every defendant, rich or poor, has a right to a
fair trial. That's why I did what I did," said Simpson.
A Republican lawyer who supports Alabama's Ten Commandments
judge said Wednesday she implicated White House aide Karl Rove in
the federal prosecution of former Democratic Gov. Don Siegelman
because she feared justice had not been served. Canary and others
said to be on the phone call have denied any such conversation
taking place.

Rove, one of President Bush's closest aides, has been at the center
of turmoil over allegations that the White House has politicized
federal investigations. In November 2002 - when Simpson says Rove
was mentioned as playing a part in the case - Siegelman, a
Democrat, was seeking a recount after narrowly losing to Riley.
